Over 60% of home computers have an active virus or spyware infection, some remain dormant whereas others will use your computer as a host for spamming other web users. The rather more unscrupulous viruses ( more commonly know as trojans ) can track your keystrokes, take screenshots and send private data back to criminals thousands of miles away.
There are always a few tell tale signs that you have a trojan or mass-email virus.
• Slow, unresponsive internet speed. Close any browsers and email clients then check the network / wireless icon in the bottom right, if everything is closed, it shouldn't be lit or constantly flashing. This means the virus may be sending data back through to the internet.
• Try pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del - if the task manager doesn't appear, it may mean a virus has disabled it to make a little harder to detect and remove. If it does open, click the 'Processes' tab and look for any services that have a string of apparently random letters and numbers.
• For the more advanced users, you can take a peek at the System32 folder in the windows directory and sort files by date, you'll often see malware/viruses as a selection of random filenames - but always check by typing the filename into google to see if it is actually a virus and not a rather important system file!
• Random pop-ups while browsing and your homepage resetting to an unknown webpage are signs of spyware, which is a little less dangerous than trojans or viruses but just as annoying.
Get protected
• Use a web browser that is regularly updated . Download Firefox.
• Use well coded security software. Check out ESET NOD3.
